Lock in Paperback by John Scalzi

  1. We return to a favorite author John Scalzi who I fell in love with after Randy introduced me to him with Old Man's War. I debated over the choice of book as the outbreak of Ebola was raging on without ceasing. However, I forged on into this intriguing book to a world facing a highly contagious virus called Haden's Syndrome that leaves 1% of it's victims unable to respond to stimuli or move their bodies. Called Haden's, victims are trapped in their own bodies with the possibility of going mad out of sheer isolation in their own minds, technology advanced out of necessity.

Robotic "Threeps" allow victims to interact with the outside world and it has been discovered that certain healthy people, Integrators, can actually be trained to allow the Haden's to use their bodies as if they were their own. Up until now the biggest difficulty in being an Integrator was that almost every Haden using Integration chooses a cheeseburger meal during their session. Integrator's are sick of eating Cheeseburgers! But now a murder occurs during a session and it's up to the FBI to determine if it was the Haden or the Integrator who was in control at the time of the murder.

As always, we eat well at book club. Cheeseburgers it is!

  2. Excellent new series. Can't wait for the next installment. Interesting trivia: there are two audible versions, One with a male voice and one female, Apparently the sex has been left completely indeterminate in the written version.
